Spirax-Sarco Engineering plc, a FTSE 250 industrial engineering group, is delighted to have won its first Queen’s Award for Enterprise in Innovation. Our Spirax Sarco steam specialties business is the global leader in the supply of engineered solutions for the design, maintenance and provision of efficient industrial and commercial steam systems. The Spirax Sarco offering is very wide, from single products through to complete turnkey bespoke packages that can include design, fabrication, commissioning and maintenance. Our products and services help our customers to implement environmentally friendly solutions to improve operational efficiency, maintain product quality, reduce energy and water use, mitigate risk and support compliance with health, safety and environmental legislation.

We are delighted to have won a Queen’s Award for Enterprise in Innovation for our Target Variable Area (TVA) flowmeter. The TVA flowmeter, from Spirax Sarco, is a revolutionary alternative to traditional steam flow measurement. The device provides reliable, accurate and cost-effective steam metering, combined with quick and easy installation, in many environments and across a range of industries worldwide, including food and beverage manufacturing, healthcare organisations, university campuses and petrochemical plants.

The TVA flowmeter uses variable area technology, including a uniquely profiled cone that conditions the steam flow and varies the flow area so that the meter can continue to measure at both low and high flow rates, where other technologies would fail. The unique profile of the cone allows installation of the flowmeter in areas where there is only a short length of pipe upstream and downstream, meaning that it can be installed in previously unsuitable pipe line areas. The flowmeter also incorporates a proprietary strain gauge and unique mathematical algorithms that are used to accurately calculate flow rates from the sensor output, as well as a compact electronics package and head unit with an ultra-low power micro-processor that enables loop powered operation.

Energy managers within all industries are facing increasing challenges and demands to reduce the carbon footprint of their plants. The data provided by the TVA flowmeter, enables steam users to identify energy saving opportunities, reduce carbon emissions and cut costs.

The award winning TVA flowmeter was designed, developed and tested in Cheltenham at our world-class technology centre and steam lab. The product range offers a variety of line sizes, superheat capability, self-powered and wireless communications options to enable us to support customers in a broad range of industries and across a variety of applications.
