At Johnson Matthey we apply our expertise in advanced materials and technology to innovate and improve solutions that are valued by our customers, optimise the use of natural resources and enhance the quality of life. We focus on clean air, clean energy and low carbon technologies and are experts in the application and recycling of precious metals.
Continued investment in Research and Development (R&D) underpins the future growth of our company. It is this investment, which reached £152.3 million in 2013/14, together with our ability to recruit the most talented and creative scientists, that enables us to maintain our expertise and leadership in advanced materials. This also drives the development of innovative value adding sustainable technologies and improved manufacturing processes.
Our achievements in innovation and commitment to sustainability have seen the company gain many awards over the years. Since 1968 the company has won more than ten Queen’s Awards for export, technology, environment and innovation.
Most recently, in 2014, the company’s emission control catalyst business received The Queen’s Award for Sustainable Development, which recognised its efficient use of resources during the manufacturing process. It is 40 years since Johnson Matthey’s first autocatalysts, the emission control catalysts used in vehicles, were produced in the UK. Since then, this technology has had a major impact on improving air quality around the world, preventing over half a billion tonnes of harmful pollutants from entering the atmosphere. Today our autocatalysts are fitted to one in three cars globally and we are a major supplier of catalysts for trucks and buses too. We were also honoured to be voted by our peers as Britain’s Most Admired Company 2014 in Management Today magazine.
Johnson Matthey is a leading speciality chemicals company with operations in more than 30 countries and employing around 12,000 people.
