Hewson Consulting Engineers have continued to expand internationally since receiving The Queen’s Award for Enterprise in 2013 and are currently involved in some of the largest bridge projects in Asia and the Middle East. Recently we have undertaken the design for 4km of viaduct and 4 stations on the new Jakarta MRT, 41km of viaduct for the Klang Valley MRT SSP Line in Malaysia, and a highway bridge and footbridge in Brunei. In Kuwait, we are working on the 26km long Subiyah Crossing and have been assisting the contractor on the 1410m span Third Bosphorus Crossing in Turkey.

The Jakarta Mass Rapid Transit project was a first for us in Indonesia. With the design being carried out in our UK Guildford office it enabled us to make the most of the 7 hour time difference when exchanging information, while communication with the team on site has benefited from the secondment of one of our engineers. The project adopts the latest precast technology and innovative piling techniques to minimise the disruption to one of Jakarta’s most congested roads. Construction on site is underway with piles installed and pile caps and columns being cast.

Our involvement in the Klang Valley MRT SSP Line comes at a time when the construction of the viaducts on the initial SBK Line is nearing completion. We started working on that design in 2009, and our continued work on the SSP Line confirms our long term relationship with Malaysia. The new MRT system will open in 2016 with the SSP Line completion expected in 2020.

Hewson has continued to specialise in long span bridges; following the detailed design of three suspension and cable stayed variants in Nigeria, we have provided advice for the hybrid Third Bosphorus Bridge, the Izmit Crossing in Turkey, and the Mersey Gateway Crossing in the UK. Assessment and strengthening of existing bridges is another area where we have continued to support local authorities in maintaining their bridge stock, recent examples being the Jamuna Multipurpose Bridge in Bangladesh and the First Penang Cable-Stayed Bridge in Malaysia.
