C&K Meats is a family-owned abattoir and wholesaler. We take great pride in our passion for provenance, supplying high quality, high welfare, locally reared beef, pork and lamb to some of the most discerning customers in the
UK and around the world (we export 42%
of our products).
We are known throughout our industry for our commitment to animal welfare, low food miles and to reducing our carbon footprint and have many accreditations including Red Tractor, RSPCA Assured and BRC Grade A. C&K also specialise in British native breeds such as Angus, Red Poll and Belted Galloway and we are proud of the role
we play in ensuring the continued existence of these breeds.
With our experience in meat wholesale and catering butchery, brothers Chris and Kevin Burrows started this award-winning company in 1994 in Earsham in Bungay. The business grew from the start and in 2010 we relocated, just a few miles away, to a newly-built state of the art factory. Located in Eye, Suffolk, the factory covers 40,000sq ft., employs over 100 people and was further upgraded in 2014 with a £750,000 investment. However, C&K Meats very much remains a family business. Our ambition is not to be the biggest, but to be the best.
C&K Meats rears its own livestock through contracted local farms, helping to boost the local economy; we developed our own high-end brand C&K Black, and we take great pride in promoting East Anglia as a world-class meat producer.
C&K recognised the opportunity to promote British meat to high-end markets abroad and, in particular, to Asia where we identified a demand for our high quality meat but where the chefs and buyers were not familiar with British cuts and terminology.
We embarked on an intensive programme of visits and demonstrations at food festivals and trade shows, fine dining restaurants and first class hotels and to aid our export drive we provided bespoke butchery training.
Three years after first exporting, C&K now sells
to Hong Kong, Singapore (at present we are one
of only five companies in the UK licensed to
export meat to Singapore), Belgium, France, Switzerland, Holland, Germany and Greece, and we have recently broken into the notoriously difficult Japanese market.
The Queen’s Award for Enterprise is the most prestigious of a number of awards we have
won over the last few years including Exporter
of the Year at the Meat and Poultry Processing Awards 2015, and British Quality Pigs Welfare Award in 2016.
Kevin Burrows, Managing Director, says:
“We are dedicated to championing sustainable values within the livestock and meat industry. We place an emphasis on sourcing quality meat locally and promoting animal welfare from husbandry to eventual slaughter.
“When we sell our products we sell a provenance story as well. In Asia they like the connection between the farmer and their plate.
“The British flag is our biggest selling point.
“The Queen’s Award for Enterprise is the pinnacle of recognition and as managing director I could not be more proud of the team I’ve got.”
C&K Meats has placed British meat on the menus of some of the finest restaurants and hotels in the world.
