Benoy, the international firm of Architects, Masterplanners, Interior and Graphic Designers, is honoured and delighted to have been named as a winner of the Queen's Awards for Enterprise 2013. Having previously won in 2008, this is the company's consecutive Award in the category of International Trade and so perhaps even more significant, acknowledging both business excellence and consistency. It would seem that the company's ability to marry imagination with commercialism, underpinned by a genuine respect for local culture, environment and history, continues to be a winning formula around the world.
Benoy began life designing local agricultural buildings, but today its work can be found in some of the most significant cities around the world. With a team of around 500 people, operating out of nine, strategically located studios, the company is perfectly positioned to serve its discerning – and ever growing – audience. Benoy's reach now extends to over 50 countries.
Founded in 1947 in Collingham, Nottinghamshire, Benoy is deeply proud of its British roots and of its UK portfolio that includes Bluewater in Kent, Bullring in Birmingham and Westfield London. Today, however, the company sees some 70 per cent of its business realised overseas with Ferrari World Abu Dhabi, UAE, Supernova, India, ION Orchard, Singapore and Elements Mall, Hong Kong, defining the company's international presence.
Developments such as the recently opened Centrum Černý Most, Czech Republic, have reinforced and even enhanced Benoy's reputation for excellence and established the company's credentials in 'Green design'. Within the Retail category, Centrum Černý Most is the first building certified BREEAM 'Very good' in Prague. Tver Marina in Russia is another example of planned green living. With a mix of Lifestyle, Retail and Leisure, the development will deliver a luxurious yet conscientious blend of architecture and design.
The company continues to enjoy great success in what some may describe as the more 'traditional' markets, but also actively seeks pockets of opportunity in areas that are new, at least to Benoy. Belarus, Burma, Mexico, Peru and Mongolia spring to mind. A forward-thinking team, their pioneering spirit has allowed them to establish new partnerships and forge new friendships in the global marketplace.
Whilst continuing to develop its excellent reputation within the Retail and Mixed-use markets, the privately-owned practice is now achieving widespread respect for its Urban Regeneration expertise and enjoying increased recognition within the Residential, Sport, Transport and Workspace sectors. Perhaps it is Benoy's understanding of people and their relationship with their surroundings that allows them to diversify with such success? INDIGO, a mixed-use destination in Beijing, opened late 2012 and includes the already internationally acclaimed EAST Hotel and so further strengthens Benoy's place in the vibrant Hospitality & Leisure sector. China, of course, remains a key market for Benoy.
International trade is a vital component of Benoy's success, but as a 'British Brand', the company recognises that its UK work has been the springboard to its achievements around the world and so is keen to acknowledge – and thank – its clients and colleagues at home as well as those overseas.
