Barings is a global investment management firm with offices, clients and business lines spanning the world’s major markets. We operate as a subsidiary of MassMutual Financial Group, a leading diversified financial services organisation, and provide investment management services in developed and emerging equity and bond markets on behalf of institutional and retail clients worldwide. As at 28 February 2011 we had £31 billion of assets under management.
We are an internationally diverse organisation operating in 13 countries with professionals from 30 different nations. The majority of investment production, operations and support activities are located in the UK. The sales and client service function for each client region is located close to where our clients are situated, enabling us to meet local needs.
Known originally as Barings Brothers, the firm has always been international in its outlook and this continues today.
Barings was first established in 1762 as a merchant house, trading in commodities in all the major international markets. Shortly afterwards the firm began to act as London agents for overseas merchants and throughout the 19th century embarked on trade financing activities in Asia and the Middle East. By the mid 1950s, Barings started to specialise as an advisor to governments on the investment of their national reserve funds and was able to move towards a more traditional investment banking role. This was the precursor for Barings’ core business today: asset management.
We opened a representative office in Korea in 2008 but in fact Barings has had a commitment to Korea for over 100 years, from the development of plans for the Seoul-Busan Railway in the early 1900s to capital-raising for Korean businesses in the 1980s and 90s, when Barings was regarded as the leading foreign investment bank in Korea – and indeed Asia.
Our history in the Middle East can be traced to the 18th century. In the early 20th century, Barings became involved in the financing of infrastructure development, such as when Thomas Baring invested in The Nile Valley Co Ltd in 1905. These historical links continue today as we continue to invest in the region’s markets and are proud to have opened a representative office in Dubai in 2010.
Barings has been doing business in Brazil for over two hundred years from trading commodities in the late 18th century to financing industry and raising capital for the Brazilian Government in the 19th and 20th centuries. We continue to be significant investors in the Brazilian equity market today.
David Brennan, Chairman and Chief Executive said “We are honoured to receive this extremely prestigious award. It recognises our international strategy and expertise, focused on creating global solutions to our clients’ investment management needs. International activity has been and will continue to be the cornerstone of Barings’ business as a leading global fund manager.”
